To get the maximum effect for your money, here’s what you can do to cut corners while shopping for solitaires. But remember, you get what you pay for.So some compromises are OK,especially if the solitaire is to be be set in jewellery and you, and if necessary others around you, can’t tell the difference. But something too cheap might have a poor cut, flaws that weaken the stone etc.So don’t be too cheap when it comes to engagement rings. Also,if you are buying for investment purposes, the factors that attract you to a cheap stone will in future attract other bargain minded buyers.Think about this if you hope for premium prices later.

The Pink Star, formerly known as the Steinmetz Pink is a flawless 59.6-carat, oval-cut, pink diamond. It has the highest possible colour and clarity rating from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA)
It was mined by De Beers in Africa in 1999 .It weighed 132.5 carats in the rough, and was cut and polished over a period of two years by Steinmetz Diamonds. This diamond was sold privately in 2007 but neither the price nor the owner was disclosed
It’s very rare to have vivid pink diamonds weighing even five carats so imagine how unique this gem is.
Sotheby’s is to auction this diamond in Geneva on November 13.It is expected to fetch $60m (£38m).
The Pink Star that is over twice the size of the 24.78-carat “Graff Pink” diamond that currently holds the record for the priciest pink diamond at $46.2m,is then expected to become the most expensive pink diamond in the world.

If you are wondering if a white stone is a diamond or an American diamond ie cubic zirconia,a common substitute, following are some ways you can try to tell them apart depending on the resources at hand. These methods are good enough for you to take a reasonably good call on whether someone’s diamonds are real, whether you have a reasonable chance at purchasing a diamond at an estate sale,or if you have inherited plain gold or diamond jewellery. However these tests are not accurate or conclusive. So consult a gemologist if considerable sums are involved. Read more of this post
