wealthymatters,com April 30, 1982. Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani became famous this afternoon. However he had no inkling of this when he woke up that morning. The only emotion he perhaps felt that hot summer morning, as the mercury crossed the 33 C mark, was wrath. For the past six weeks, a syndicate of stockbrokers had been hammering his company’s shares on the Bombay Stock Exchange,and he didn’t like it.

April 30 was a Friday, the day he could vent his anger, take his revenge. On the BSE, alternate Fridays were settlement days when all transactions which had taken place the previous fortnight were cleared.Sellers delivered shares to buyers, buyers accepted delivery, or either party asked for the transaction to be postponed to the next clearance day after paying badla or compensation for the delay. This day was one of the settlement Fridays. It would go down in the BSE’s history as a day of total chaos.

The stage for this drama was set a few days earlier, on March 18, when a selling hysteria shocked the BSE. In twenty-five minutes of panic, starting at 1.35. p.m. the price of blue-chips like Century and Tisco crashed by ten per cent. They fell like dominoes on the back of Ambani’s Reliance Textile Industries which fell from Rs 131 to Rs 121 as 350,000 of its shares hit the market. Read more of this post

Kuber Mudra

wealthymatters,com Mudra means gesture. Kuber Mudra is believed to help achieve one’s goals in general and wealth in particular.Hence it is named after Kuber, the Treasurer of the Gods.

To form this mudra the tips of your thumb, index, and middle fingers are joined. And the ring finger and pinky are folded into the palm as shown in the picture to the left.

After folding the figures of both your hands into Kuber Mudras,you are supposed to focus with your full intensity on what you want and think of as if you have already got it. This Mudra is supposed to help channel your energy and motivation towards what you want.

In case of this Mudra, its less important how long you do it for as compared to how much intensity you do it with.Doing it for 15 minutes each morning,while focusing on what you want done during the day is supposed to generate the desired results. Sangeeta,a wealthymatters reader,swears by its efficacy for her.

In this mudra the thumb,index and middle figure come into play.The thumb is associated with Mars,the index finger with Jupiter and the middle finger with Saturn.Mars is associated with forcefulness,Jupiter with resplendence and Saturn with fixation on the essential.So by bringing together these forces a person achieves goals and becomes wealthy.

Be Uncomfortable If You Would Be Successful

When you sit in Vajrasana – the yogic posture with your knees bent, your body takes it for a while and then revolts. If you prolong the position, you get a taste of what Indian yogic torture feels like! But Vajrasana has to be mastered if one has to progress in Yoga.

In business also, being ‘uncomfortable’ is being progressive. Being comfortable is slipping into ‘denial’ and into danger zone.

Lakshmi Vishnu And The Start-Up

wealthymatters,com In Hindu mythology, Lakshmi (wealth) chases Vishnu. Vishnu has two sides: Kama and Yama. Kama is the irresponsible dreamer of love and life. Yama is the cautious accountant who watches over debt and death.

Kama is the CEO who dreams big and attracts followers. Yama is the CFO who has to keep an eye on the balance sheet.

Kama has garuda-drishti: the bird’s eye view and focuses on the woods not the trees. Yama has sarpa-drishti: the serpent’s eye view and counts the trees and ignores the forest.

The two are eternally churning the ocean of milk, each one knowing when to pull and when to let go.

In your start up, when you focus on your vision ,incur sunk costs,concentrate on acquiring customers and growing the top line you behave as Kama.On the other hand when you focus on limiting risks,cutting costs,managing or reducing debt,maintaining margins and profitability you are behaving like Yama. As long as you manage to strike a balance between both types of activities you are likely to be Lakshmi-pati (wealthy).If Yama stifles Kama,the business will not get off the ground and if Kama gets out of hand,the business is likely to be run into the ground.
