T. S. Kalyanaraman – Newly Minted Billionaire

wealthymatters As per Bloomberg’s calculation T. S. Kalyanaraman ,Chairman and Managing Director of Kalyan Jewellers, the largest jewellery chain in India, is now a billionaire.This is his response to the news:“I don’t calculate my net worth.I am more keen to trade, develop my brand, but you may be right.”

Here is his story in his own words:

“My family has been in business for the last 110 years. It was my grandfather, T. S. Kalyanaramaiyer who first moved away from priesthood and became a businessman.He moved from Kumbakonam to Thrissur to start a textile mill. I think it was in the 1930s that the mill was taken over by the government and that was when he decided to start a textile shop.Later, my father Seetharamaiyer joined him followed by myself and my four brothers. wealthymatters,com If you are inclined to follow the news reporting of the WEF-2013,do so by all means but don’t take everything that is said seriously.

There might be something as the wisdom of the crowds,but the “wisdom” gained from the sound bytes generated from some of the billionaires and the financial ,political and academic elite gathered at Davos,Switzerland may not be the most accurate.

The predictions that emanate from Davos always have a ring of plausibility to them because of the credibility of the speakers. But all too often they fall short. Here is one example: Bill Gates has made the pilgrimage to the Alps for more than a decade and made a series of somewhat famous – or infamous – predictions in that time.When asked about Google back in 2003, he didn’t have an upbeat outlook on the company’s future nor its founders. “These Google guys, they want to be billionaires and rock stars and go to conferences and all that,” Gates said. “Let us see if they still want to run the business in two to three years.”

To the left are other such projections. Not all turned out wrong,but even people who got one thing right got other things wrong.So watch the Alpine scenery and the power show,go to Switzerland if you must ,these days its become pretty cheap,but don’t take everything you hear as serious investment advice.

Alexa And Wealthymatters

Alexa is one of the big players in the search engine business, though its nowhere the size of Google .It has been around since 1996. Alexa is a subsidiary of Amazon.com. Alexa gives detailed site metrics and traffic reports with its search results, that a large number of tools and people,especially advertisers, use when evaluating a blog. Also, Alexa has an extensive set of APIs and web services that are commonly used by a large number of third party search tools.So a good Alexa rank is pretty important.

As Wealthymatters got into the List Of Top 30 Personal Finance Blogs In India via the Alexa India rankings, I decided to get to know about Alexa. The first thing that struck me was how Alexa merely counts the people who have the Alexa Toolbar installed.These are mainly SEO experts and other tech savvy people.So Wealthymatters traffic is bound to be under reported.To count every visitor, I now have the Alexa Traffic Widget installed on my blog.You can get one for your blog here:Link .Unfortunately installing these widgets on WordPress.com blogs is not straight forward.You have to use the Firefox browser and open the Alexa page and generate the code and image of the widget first.Then right click on the image and select the ‘copy image location’option.
