Dealing at the community level is good for independent retailers but the large chains seem to be uninterested in the communities they trade in; this is my experience of the issue in UK, may be different in other nations.
The large retailers might ride rough shod over local opposition because they can but my guess is that they have an intimate understanding of the finances, tastes, aspirations, psychology and decision making patterns of their consumers or they are bound to be passed over for another chain or efficient local retailer.
