The Story Of Annapoorna

wealthymattersIt is believed, it was on Akshaya Tritiya day that the Goddess of food known as Annapoorna, a special avatar of Goddess Parvati, who feeds the hungry, was born.

Goddess Parvati was told by her consort Shiva that the world is an illusion and that food is a part of this illusion called Maya. The Divine Mother who is worshiped as the manifestation of all material things, including food, became angry. To demonstrate the importance of her manifestation of all that is material, she disappeared from the world. Her disappearance brought time to a standstill and the earth became barren. There was no food to be found anywhere, and all the beings suffered from the pangs of hunger.

Seeing all the suffering, Mother Parvati was filled with compassion and reappeared in Kasi and set up a kitchen. Hearing about her return, Shiva ran to her and presented his bowl in alms, saying, “Now I realise that the material world, like the spirit, cannot be dismissed as an illusion.” Parvati smiled and fed Shiva with her own hands.

Lord Krishna And Sudama On Akshaya Tritiya

wealthymattersThe most famous of the Akshaya Tritiya stories is the legend of Lord Krishna and Sudama, his poor Brahmin childhood friend. On this day, the tale goes, Sudama came over to Lord Krishna’s palace to request him for some financial help. As a gift for his friend, Sudama had nothing more than a handful of beaten rice or ‘poha’. He was utterly ashamed to give it to Lord Krishna, but Lord Krishna took the pouch of ‘poha’ from him and relished having it.

Lord Krishna followed the principle of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ or ‘the guest is like God’ and treated Sudama like a king. His poor friend was so overwhelmed by the warmth and hospitality shown by Lord Krishna, that he could not ask for the financial favor and came home empty handed.

Lo and behold! When he reached his place, Sudama’s old hut was transformed into a palace! He found his family dressed in royal attire and everything around was new and expensive. Sudama knew that it was a boon from Lord Krishna, who blessed him with more than the wealth he actually intended to ask for. Therefore, Akshaya Tritiya is associated with material gains and wealth acquisition.

Successful Courtship

Missed Chances!

wealthymattersI met both Carl Page and Larry Page at a party hosted by a Stanford friend of mine in 1998.

Carl gave me his card for eGroups and said “we’re hiring”. Larry gave me his card for Google—a flimsy bit of paper obviously printed by bubble jet—and said “we’re hiring”.

I said, “Nah, who needs another search engine?” and went to graduate school.

I still have the card.

–  Ka-Ping Yee

Ka-Ping Yee turned down a job with Google in 1998, the year the search engine incorporated.Considering that Bonnie Brown, the in-house masseuse who Google hired in 1999 to knead the occasionally stressed shoulders of the 40 employees who worked there at the time, became a multimillionaire when the company went public, and that by 2007 Google had already minted more than 1000 millionaires, it’s a safe bet that Yee missed out on more than the chance to knock Altavista and Lycos off their mighty perches.

This sort of thing happens when we are too judgmental and write off people as unlikely to succeed, based on appearances.
