Kuthu Vilakku

The ubiquitous five-nozzle kuthu vilakku which you will see at all festivals,celebrations and auspicious occasions has been in use from the days of the Cholas or perhaps even earlier.

The five petals or nozzles  represent the five elements of Nature — earth, water, fire, air and sky or space. The five nozzles also denote the five main elements needed for a successful life — health, wealth, learning, courage and longevity.Remind yourself of this each time you see a kuthu vilakku.

An NRI Writes…..

RAM KRISHNASWAMY writes from Sydney, Australia: Two years ago, I attended a reception for a Union Minister who had come to Sydney to make a big speech asking all NRIs to invest big in India and to attend the annual NRI yatra that was to be held at Bombay.

The Minister was expecting NRIs to queue up and pledge millions if not billions as was done by some Indians in Hong Kong and South Africa. He was most disappointed with the NRIs in Australia.

When question time came, the audience were suggesting to the Minister that for them to come to India to attend the meeting, they needed reduced fares in Air-India as well as freeaccommodation in Bombay! Read more of this post

Taash Parties

A variety of card games and games of chance are played.The most popular is Teen Patti (three-card brag). The bets can range  from petty cash to lakhs of rupees.

Taash parties are loud and colourful family affairs where everyone dresses up and wagers money and makes merry as the food and drink flows.

The tradition of gambling on Diwali has a legend behind it. It is believed that on this day, Goddess Parvati played dice with her husband Lord Shiva and being pleased with her winnings ,decreed that whosoever gambled on Diwali night would prosper throughout the ensuing year. So this tradition of gambling on Diwali continues even to-day. This episode has been immortalized in stone in the 8th century Kailashnath Temple in Ellora. Read more of this post
