The Tamil New Year follows the Nirayanam vernal equinox and generally falls on 14 April of the Gregorian year.The day is Chithirai 1 as per the Tamil calender.
Every year,starting on this day, in the temple city of Madurai, the Chitterai Thiruvizha is celebrated in the Meenakshiamman Temple. A huge exhibition is held here, called Chitterai Porutkaatchi.
This day is celebrated with neem flowers and raw mangoes to symbolize growth and prosperity and people greet each other by saying ‘Puthandu Vazthukal’.
Sri Lankan Tamils observe the day with the first financial transaction known as the ‘Kai-vishesham’ where elders gift money to the unmarried young, particularly children as a token of good luck. The day is also observed with the ‘arpudu’ or the first ploughing of the ground to prepare for the new agricultural cycle. The ‘punya-kaalam’ or auspicious time when the sun reportedly shifts from Meena raasi to Mesha raasi is considered ideal to commence new activities on a favorable note.
Housewives=Prostitutes=Beggars=Thieves?

Apparently the Census of India clubs housewives with prostitutes, beggars and prisoners as they are all deemed to not engage in economically productive work.The Supreme Court has taken strong exception to this and has held that housewives are employees and their ‘gratuitous’ services to their husbands and children can’t be taken for granted.Thanks to Remi for bringing this factoid to my notice.Ladies note that at least the highest court of the land acknowledges your unpaid labour!

Our government would have us believe that it is the insatiable appetite of Indians for gold that is at the bottom of our balance of payment problems.Here is the truth and the figures have been put up by the RBI not any advocacy group with an agenda!
The net impact on trade deficit due to the domestic demand of gold is estimated at 0.3% of GDP. It is not perceived to be very significant. However, reducing this could bring down the current account deficit (CAD) — which reflects the gap between domestic savings and investments.
So how about some truth?Anybody for fiscal consolidation?Cutting down on wasteful government expenditure?Can we start out by ensuring that government servants opt for basic vehicles not glam ones and ordinary phones not Apple models,when these are bought out of government money?How about an audit of where exactly our subsidies have gone and who exactly has benefited from them?How about a little less corruption in government?As one stalwart put it why not a more tolerable level of corruption rather than the dacoity killing our economy?
