For those sort of prices I may as well buy a house in the nation I stay in.
Really?
What is your guess the cheapest place in the UK might cost? What sort of place would it be?
These room rates are pretty steep, but interestingly a palace hotel in Jaipur is at number 2.
At these rates we might get places in India too but they will be deary concrete boxes of about 350 sq ft in the far suburbs with little or no municipal infrastructure,Are the British choices better?Any chance any cottages in this budget?
Depending on location some houses have been offered for £1.00

I din’t know about the crime ridden area,But the 2500 Pound house seems interesting,Can non residents buy homes in the UK?If so where can they find such deals?
Yes non-residents can buy property in UK. The vehicle as I would play it is set up a company and employ an agent on the ground to oversee the process for purchase, repair and whatever purpose the assets are to be used for. The sale is usually by public auctions.
Has the company to be registered in the UK or will India do?
I think that with a visa and ticket costs and some basic living expenses I could easily find people with construction experience to go over and fix up the place.
What about the condition of living in the place for 5 years? Will students meet the requirement? Is this place close to any university/college?
These are the sort of questions I am unable to answer since I have no experience in those markets or knowledge on the local level in those areas.
Anything like this happening in your area?
Not at those sort of prices. Colchester is a relatively prosperous area. However, Jaywick in Clacton might throw up possibilities of low priced houses.
These are for East Anglia cheap:
