I’m not sure the first quote is true. I had a business for a number of years and used to employ people. Some of them were brilliant from the word go. Some of them looked promising and I discovered after a while they were not. They were trained and helped and given second and third chances, but in the end they had to go.
Gauging how someone will react three months or a year down the line from an interview is very difficult. No one puts ‘I’m a thief’ or ‘I am lazy’ on their application form.

    • Pat no one is immune to mistakes. No one knows how employees will turn out in the long run.A few lazy and dishonest people took advantage of your generosity. Your options in future are to be less lenient in which case you will lose the people with the capacity and willingness to learn.Or you can continue to be as you are and undoubtedly others too will take advantage of you but you might find some loyal employees. The best you can do is not take it personally when things go wrong,In either case the choice is yours and you like every other employer will be faced with the results of your decisions and actions.
